Crane Collapses on Miami Cars, Four Hurt

A construction crane collapsed onto a Miami street Monday morning, crushing cars, setting one on fire and sending four people to the hospital, officials said.
The rig came down in Brickell, Miami's financial district, near Brickell Bay Drive and Southeast 12th Street. Police said the collapse happened Monday morning.
The four injured — a driver and three construction workers, according to officials — were hospitalized in stable condition with minor injuries. The cause is under investigation.
What Fell, and On What
Three vehicles were struck and at least one caught fire after the crane landed on it. Two construction workers were trapped inside a storage container hit by the rig and had to be cut free. The crane operator jumped clear as the machine tipped and was taken to a trauma center.
Bloomberg reported the collapse happened near the construction site of Citadel's new headquarters, crushing several cars and snarling traffic.

Miami Fire Chief Robert Hevia called it a "complex scene," with crews simultaneously cutting trapped workers free and fighting a burning vehicle.
Miami police confirmed the location and the number of injured. None of the four have been publicly identified.
One motorist escaped her burning car by reversing just before the crane struck it.
What's Next
Investigators have not said what caused the rig to fall, or whether any safety violations contributed.
Officials have not announced whether the construction project will be halted while the investigation proceeds. Street closures around the site were in place Monday.
