French Centrist Glucksmann Enters 2027 Presidential Race

Raphael Glucksmann, a center-left member of the European Parliament, launched a bid Sunday for the French presidency in the 2027 election.
Glucksmann, 46, leads the center-left party Place Publique and is positioning himself as a pro-European, pro-Ukraine alternative to both the far right and the hard left, France 24 reported.
He is entering a field that is crowded even on the left alone, and he will have to win a Socialist Party primary this year to become that party's candidate, according to Bloomberg.

Glucksmann, co-president of Place Publique, spoke with journalists in Jonquiere in southwestern France.
AFP reported Glucksmann was expected to declare his candidacy in a primetime interview on French television that evening. Reuters and France 24 reported later Sunday that he had launched the bid.
Glucksmann will take part in the Socialist Party's primary vote to choose its candidate for 2027, Bloomberg reported.
France votes for a successor to President Emmanuel Macron, who cannot run again.

France 24 reported that Glucksmann is aiming to unite moderate left-wing voters and to challenge the influence of hard-left leader Jean-Luc Melenchon over the French left. Reuters framed the launch the same way — a bid made into a fractured left.
The Times of Israel, citing AFP, reported that Glucksmann is polling around 10-12%, likely not enough to reach the two-candidate runoff.
AFP reported that Le Pen "scents her best-ever chance of winning the Elysee."
What's Next
The immediate consequence of Glucksmann's move, AFP reported, is that his partner — journalist Lea Salame, a top news reader on public broadcaster France 2 — was expected to announce she is stepping aside to avoid any conflict of interest during the campaign.
Next comes the Socialist primary later this year, then the first round of the presidential election in 2027, where the top two candidates advance to a runoff.

Glucksmann is a former essayist and commentator turned politician. He is the son of the late French philosopher Andre Glucksmann.
