Gas Hits $4.31 National Average; Diesel Sets Records

The News
American drivers are paying $4.31 a gallon for regular gas on average, with multiple states now over $5, as two wars scramble global energy supply.
Diesel is the bigger shock: it remains at a record high nationally, and Cleveland.com reported unleaded is already $6 a gallon in California as of Sept. 14, 2026.
AAA told WPXI in Pittsburgh the run-up follows volatility in the Strait of Hormuz, which has pushed crude oil back into the $100-per-barrel range for the first time since July.
The Numbers
Michigan posted the largest weekly jump of any state, up 32 cents a gallon, according to The Center Square. Wisconsin rose more than 29 cents to $4.09, trailing only Michigan and Utah for the biggest week-over-week increase.
Virginia's regular average climbed nearly 18 cents in a week to $4.14 on Monday. Pennsylvania gas jumped more than 20 cents. Florida moved up by double digits to more than $4, the Miami Herald reported.
In Georgia, gas is over $4 and diesel averages $6.18 — a rise of more than 60 cents in a week, the largest diesel increase in the country, per AAA figures cited by The Center Square.
North Carolina diesel set a state record after crossing $6 a gallon, up 77.6% since January. Gas there is up 52.1% over the same stretch.
Timeline
The baseline for this year's climb: North Carolina diesel would go on to rise 77.6% from this point, with gas up 52.1%.
The last time crude oil traded in the $100-per-barrel range before the current spike, according to AAA.
Convenience store traffic "stepped back down" as fuel prices rose, ZeroHedge reported, an early sign the pump was pulling money out of everyday spending.
The national average hits $4.31 a gallon, several states top $5, California unleaded reaches $6, and Georgia diesel averages $6.18.
Reactions
President Trump recently blamed Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries for the diesel spike, The New York Times reported. Analysts quoted by the Times said the Iran war is probably the bigger factor.
AAA has pointed to the Strait of Hormuz as the pressure point, tying the pump increase directly to crude climbing back toward $100 a barrel.
The Center Square reported that record diesel prices are hammering North Carolina's trucking industry, with costs rippling out through the freight chain.
What's Next
Pump prices track crude with a lag, so if oil holds near $100 a barrel the state averages reported Monday have further to climb before they level off.
Diesel is the number to watch: because it moves freight, its record highs feed into the price of everything trucked, and it is rising faster than gasoline in states like Georgia and North Carolina.
Weekly AAA state-by-state averages are the next checkpoint on whether the Hormuz-driven spike is easing or spreading.
More
The spread between states is unusually wide. California, the most expensive market in the country, is at $6 for unleaded, while Wisconsin sits at $4.09 and Virginia at $4.14 — a gap of nearly $2 a gallon depending on where a driver fills up.
The strain is already showing up off the forecourt. ZeroHedge cited data showing convenience store traffic declining in August as fuel costs rose, meaning fewer trips inside for the high-margin snacks and drinks that keep those stores running.
