Germany Blames Russia, Shuts Bonn Consulate Over Drones

Germany formally blamed Russia on Tuesday for the failed explosive-drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport on August 4 — and said it will retaliate by closing the Russian consulate in Bonn and the Russian House cultural center in Berlin.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the investigation concluded that "Russia is responsible for the hybrid attack," and that the incident "fits the established pattern of Russian hybrid operations in Europe." He said Berlin expects more attacks of the kind.
Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced the consulate and cultural-center closures and said Germany will push for tougher sanctions on Moscow. The Wall Street Journal called the move to retaliate a rare step for Berlin.
Russia's Foreign Ministry told the Interfax news agency that Moscow "will respond to all anti-Russian actions." The New York Times reported Russia did not immediately comment on the accusation itself.

Police find a drone carrying an explosive device on airport grounds at Leipzig/Halle, near a parked Ukrainian cargo aircraft. In the same window, a DHL cargo plane collides with an unknown object, per German police accounts reported by Reuters and Air Cargo News.
The airport is one of Europe's busiest cargo hubs and a logistics node for NATO allies and Ukraine's heavy-lift air fleet.
Investigators find a third drone in a field west of the airport, near Kabelsketal, along with roughly 50 grams of a substance they suspected to be a military explosive, according to the Jerusalem Post and aviation trade outlet Aerotime.
Dobrindt publicly attributes the attempted attack to Russia. Wadephul announces the closures and the sanctions push.
Reactions
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the "evidence is clear" and welcomed Germany's measures. "NATO will continue to strengthen our ability to deter and defend all Allies against any threat — including malign actions like those seen in Leipzig and elsewhere across the Alliance," he said, adding that Russia's attempts "to intimidate us, to undermine our unity and our willingness to support Ukraine are futile and will fail."
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she spoke with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and "assured him that the EU stands in full solidarity with Germany in the face of this attack by Russia." She said Russia "is seeking to sow distrust and fear among our societies. But it will fail."
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said Poland "stands foursquare behind every ally attacked by Russia's hybrid war" and pointed to EU talks on "collective countermeasures."
What's Next
EU foreign ministers take up further steps on Wednesday, Sikorski said, at the informal Gymnich meeting hosted by Ireland. Von der Leyen said she would discuss the incident with Rutte on Wednesday as well.
Still open: which sanctions Germany and its allies actually impose and on what timeline, whether German prosecutors name individuals or units behind the drones, and how Moscow answers the consulate closure.

The attribution lands amid warnings across NATO's eastern flank. Reuters reported in August that Lithuania, Poland, Latvia and Estonia have raised alarms about Russian sabotage and a possible staged attack, with Lithuania sending a military unit to help secure its LNG import terminal, an oil products terminal, a power link to Poland and a hydro plant.
"We are not naive, we see the information, we read between the lines and we are doing our homework," Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas told Reuters.
