The News

Bob Iger and Joshua Kushner have agreed to buy a controlling interest in the Los Angeles Lakers for $12.5 billion — the highest price ever paid for a sports team — from Mark Walter, whose financial empire is the subject of a federal investigation.

Walter bought control of the franchise roughly 14 months ago. The Los Angeles Times reports the flip nets him a $2.5-billion profit.

The deal still needs approval from the NBA Board of Governors.

Who Is Buying

Iger ran the Walt Disney Co. as chief executive twice, most recently from late 2022 until earlier this year. He joined Kushner's Thrive Capital briefly in 2022 and returned to the firm in March.

Kushner founded Thrive Capital in 2009. Forbes estimates his net worth at more than $5 billion. His older brother, Jared Kushner, is President Trump's son-in-law.

Thrive's sports arm, Thrive Eternal, previously bought and sold a stake in the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies and holds stakes in the Miami Heat and MLB's San Francisco Giants, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The pair had been pushing for an NBA expansion team in Las Vegas until the chance to pay cash for the Lakers appeared instead.

The Probe Behind the Sale

The Los Angeles Times, the Wall Street Journal and Sportico all report that Walter is facing a federal criminal probe and a parallel SEC investigation into his insurance holdings.

According to the Los Angeles Times, prosecutors and securities regulators are examining roughly $16 billion in undisclosed loans from two Delaware life insurers Walter owns to his own companies, after one of those insurers revised its stated related-party exposure from about $1 billion to $16 billion.

Sports Business Journal reported on Aug. 13 that insurers in Walter's portfolio have been racing to divest private-credit loans tied to other parts of his empire.

The Los Angeles Times says the lightning-quick Lakers sale comes as Walter's business faces that scrutiny, prompting a rush for cash. None of the published reports describe charges filed against Walter, and he retains ownership of the Dodgers.

Reactions

"Grateful, appreciative, excited to own something that's as iconic as the L.A. Lakers," Iger said in an interview with the California Post. "Josh and I are avid NBA fans. And [to] have an opportunity to own not just any NBA team, but the L.A. Lakers is extraordinary from a life experience perspective and business perspective. It's still sinking in. We're very excited."

Iger told Bloomberg this week that the Lakers are the "epitome of an eternal asset."

He also waved off questions about a game plan. "It's just premature to speculate at all about what we plan to do, because frankly, we haven't made any plans yet," Iger said. "Again, we go into this with an appreciation of who the Lakers are. And we just want to build value from today on."

Walter has said he loved owning the Lakers but decided recently that it was time to sell. A representative for Iger and Kushner told the Los Angeles Times neither man would speak to the paper until the sale closes.

What's Next

The sale cannot close until the NBA Board of Governors signs off.

ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, speaking on Stephen A. Smith's YouTube show, said the front-office overhaul modeled on the Los Angeles Dodgers will continue under the new owners.

"They were in the process of Dodgerizing the Lakers, right?" Shelburne said. "All of the brains and all of the apparatus that had been installed with the Dodgers to make them the most successful franchise in baseball the last few years was being implemented with the Lakers. Everyone who's been hired, everyone who's been put in place here, they're still going to keep doing what they're doing."

Whether the federal and SEC investigations into Walter's insurance businesses produce any enforcement action remains open.

More

The Lakers are a 17-time champion franchise. Under Walter's short tenure the team parted with LeBron James, signed Austin Reaves to a long extension, traded for center Walker Kessler and added complementary players, with Luka Doncic now the face of the roster.

Iger is a longtime Clippers fan who told JJ Redick — now the Lakers' head coach — on a 2021 podcast that he grew up a New York Knicks fan and that rooting for the Lakers was "not in my DNA." He is also a close friend of NBA commissioner Adam Silver, who introduced him to his wife, Willow Bay, in the 1990s.
