Kuwait's army said Thursday it was intercepting a missile and drone attack launched from Iran, France 24 reported — the latest round in a tit-for-tat exchange that both sides have escalated all week.

Iran has targeted US bases in Kuwait, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region, France 24 reported, after extensive US bombardment of sites across Iran on Tuesday.

Whether anything was hit in Kuwait is not established. The Jerusalem Post reported that local sources told Iranian state broadcaster IRIB a US base in Kuwait had been struck and that smoke was rising from the site. The Jerusalem Post noted that neither the United States nor Kuwait has confirmed that claim. CNBC reported only that Kuwait's army said it was confronting hostile missile and drone attacks.

US embassies in the region have issued a security alert, The Independent reported. The outlet described the current fighting as the biggest exchange of fire since July.
