Markey, 80, Beats Moulton in Massachusetts Primary
The News
The oldest senator in state history turned back a challenger 33 years younger
Sen. Ed Markey won the Massachusetts Democratic Senate primary Tuesday night, defeating Rep. Seth Moulton in a race that was fought almost entirely over age.
Markey, 80, is seeking a third full term, CNN reported after its Decision Desk projected the result. Moulton, 47, had built his campaign on the argument that the party needs new leaders. NBC News called the outcome a win for the party's progressive wing.
The result cuts against the pattern of this primary season. NPR reported that Markey prevailed despite a broad push for younger Democratic leadership, and The New York Times reported that the oldest senator in Massachusetts history used a progressive message to beat back the generational-change argument.
What's Next
Markey will face Republican John Deaton in November, MSNBC reported. Massachusetts is heavily Democratic; PBS NewsHour reported before the vote that the primary winner would be expected to prevail in the general election.
More
Age was the central issue and both sides knew it. The New York Post noted that Markey would be 86 at the end of another six-year term. The Washington Examiner described the contest as one of the more bitter Democratic feuds of the cycle — and one that bucked the trend of younger insurgents ousting older incumbents.
