OpenAI Claims $1M Math Proof; Mathematician Alleges Intimidation

The News

OpenAI said Tuesday that an unreleased AI model solved the Navier-Stokes problem — one of math's seven Millennium Prize Problems, each carrying a $1 million bounty from the Clay Mathematics Institute — and the announcement immediately turned into a fight over credit.

The company says a multi-agent system running as many as 10,000 concurrent sub-agents proved that the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations can break down, or "blow up," under certain conditions. The Guardian reported the run took about 88 hours.

Hours earlier, NYU mathematics professor Tristan Buckmaster published a statement saying he and Anthropic mathematician Levent Alpöge had spent nearly a year pursuing the same unusual line of attack — and that OpenAI only started chasing the problem in the past week, after word of their progress reached the company.

Buckmaster also says an OpenAI researcher asked him, "Why would you ruin your career?" OpenAI's Sebastien Bubeck calls the allegations against him "false and inflammatory."

The Numbers

OpenAI told reporters it spent computing resources at least 1,000 times greater than the roughly $2,000 in compute it used on previous math challenges — putting the bill in the millions, per Fortune. OpenAI says it does not plan to claim the $1 million prize.

Timeline

2000

The Clay Mathematics Institute, founded by mutual fund magnate Landon Clay, names seven Millennium Prize Problems and attaches a $1 million award to each. Navier-Stokes, which governs fluid flow and underpins everything from weather forecasting to aircraft design, is one of them.

Roughly a year ago

Buckmaster and Alpöge begin work on the problem, building on an approach opened by mathematicians Diego Cordoba and Luis Martinez-Zoroa. Progress is slow. Alpöge, though employed by Anthropic, is not working on the company's behalf.

Mid-August 2026

The pair's progress accelerates sharply with help from AI models, primarily OpenAI's Codex and Anthropic's Claude. Buckmaster calls it "a Deep Blue-Kasparov" moment for mathematics.

On a call with several OpenAI researchers, Buckmaster says he learned OpenAI was about to claim a full solution using the same route he and Alpöge had chosen. Under repeated questioning, he says, the team acknowledged it had only attacked the problem in the past week — after rumors circulated that Anthropic was close — and had burned enormous compute doing it.

Reactions

Buckmaster's core suspicion is about data. "I asked whether the model had been trained on, or had access to, our sessions in Codex, into which we had been putting all our drafts for the whole of this project," he wrote. "I was told the model did not look up user data. I asked again, about training, and I did not get an answer."

He also says the approach itself was too obscure to be a coincidence: "Almost nobody else I know of was working on it. It is not the direction one arrives at in a few days by giving a model the problem statement."

Buckmaster says Bubeck floated a compromise in which Buckmaster could publish and claim the prize — but only if he said OpenAI's model had also solved the problem, and only if he removed Alpöge's name from the paper, because OpenAI disliked his Anthropic affiliation. When Buckmaster refused and said he would go public, he says Bubeck asked, "Why would you ruin your career?" and added, "If you don't want me to be nice, then I don't have to be nice."

Buckmaster stopped short of a direct accusation. "I have not seen OpenAI's proof. I do not know what their model did, or how. I do not know whether our data was used. I am not accusing anyone of anything. I am stating what I was told, when, and what was proposed to me."

Bubeck, who led the OpenAI project, posted on X that "a series of false and inflammatory allegations against me are currently circulating on social channels," said he "came into the discussion following academic norms," and promised a fuller statement. In a press briefing he said: "We did not use their prompts or proofs to prompt our models or direct our agents. We, whether it's the researchers or the agents, did not see any of their work until they were released publicly yesterday night." He added that OpenAI recognizes "the priority of Levent Alpöge and Tristan Buckmaster's work."

OpenAI's announcement says "no specific user data was accessed in order to solve this problem," while conceding that "while unlikely, we cannot rule out that de-identified data derived from their usage of our products helped improve our models." Buckmaster responded on Mastodon that OpenAI is "openly admitting they used training data from a period after we found our result."

What's Next

The proof has to survive review. Clay Mathematics Institute President Martin Bridson said the evaluation will be "deliberately unhurried" and "absolutely rigorous." Buckmaster and Alpöge's own work stopped short of a full solution along the same route, so reviewers will have to decide whether OpenAI's proof is complete.

Bubeck has said he will say more. OpenAI has not answered whether a model trained on Buckmaster's Codex sessions could have surfaced his work; the company did not respond to TechCrunch's request for comment on that point.

The fight lands on a live business question, not just an academic one. OpenAI's terms let it train on user-submitted data unless customers opt out through its privacy portal, and Buckmaster says he ran the entire project's drafts through Codex. Executives including Microsoft's Satya Nadella and Palantir's Alex Karp have publicly warned that frontier AI labs harvest customer know-how and build competing products with it. This dispute is the sharpest test yet of whether researchers can safely do unpublished work inside a commercial AI tool.

OpenAI also concedes in its own blog post that it went after Navier-Stokes because of rumors Anthropic was about to crack it — a measure of how hot the rivalry between the two labs has become.
