The News

OpenAI on Thursday launched ChatGPT for Financial Services, a version of its enterprise product aimed squarely at the research, financial modeling and pitchbook work that Wall Street has long handed to junior bankers.

The product runs on OpenAI's latest model, GPT-6 Astra, and was built with "design partners" Morgan Stanley and boutique advisory firm Evercore, according to Nick Turley, OpenAI's vice president and head of ChatGPT.

It is available only to eligible institutions with a ChatGPT enterprise account, which must clear access directly with OpenAI.

What It Does

The system pulls in pre-loaded data from Daloopa, PitchBook, Crunchbase and LSEG News, and lets banks connect existing subscriptions to datasets from firms such as Bloomberg or FactSet — roughly 50 connectors in total through MCP, an open-source protocol for linking AI models to outside software.

It generates PowerPoint presentations, Excel spreadsheets and web-based dashboards, and attaches citations that let users trace figures back to source filings. Administrators can pre-load a firm's branded slide templates and set data-retention and role-based access rules for sensitive deal materials.

In a live demonstration, Turley showed the platform analyzing a potential merger target, pulling financial figures from industry data sources and building a formatted slide deck in a bank's house style. OpenAI told reporters a set of sample slides took Astra about 10 minutes to produce.

Reactions

Turley pitched the tool as an apprentice that shows its work. "We're effectively teaching ChatGPT to research like an analyst and back up its conclusions like an analyst as well," he said at a briefing announcing the product.

Asked by CNBC whether the product would reduce the need to hire junior bankers, Turley framed it as a productivity boost rather than a replacement. "If you study the life of an analyst or of a banker, depending on the industry, they're working 100-hour weeks," he said. "I think in the same way that Microsoft Excel transformed the industry and allowed them to produce better analysis faster, you will see technology like this do the same."

He also set a high bar for adoption, saying OpenAI wants its offering to be "the one product" large banks will ever need. "This is the canonical product we are hoping the industry adopts," Turley said.

Joseph Kim, product lead for ChatGPT for Financial Services, said the goal is not just speed. "We're trying to think of new ways of doing the work, rather than just making the existing ways faster," he said, adding that a new intern would have a firm's templates "pre-loaded and ready to go" on day one.

Goldman's Churchman offered the counterweight last month: "Reasoning is still important. You still need to reason about [problems] and structure it into an argument, and now we're delegating reasoning."

What's Next

Turley said OpenAI plans to release tailored products for "a number of sectors" beyond financial services; the company has also named cybersecurity and software engineering as verticals it is building for.

He said there is "a ton of demand" for the finance version but declined to name banks that have signed on.

The release lands as OpenAI presses its enterprise push ahead of what is widely expected to be a blockbuster public offering, and as it competes with Anthropic and Google for the same corporate customers.

More

The product is a distinct offering from ChatGPT Work, the enterprise version it is based on, with finance-specific features layered on top. Users can set the Astra model to high, medium or low "effort" — higher effort burns more tokens and costs more, but OpenAI says it can yield better output.

Data is encrypted and protected through ChatGPT Enterprise's SAML single sign-on, SCIM provisioning and role-based access controls.

The wider question is what happens to an industry built on an apprenticeship model. Wall Street has for decades hired recent college graduates as analysts and associates to grind through deal research and pitchbooks — the exact tasks this software is designed to automate.
