Republicans Snub Trump Convention, Warn on Affordability

Republicans are openly breaking with President Trump over his messaging weeks before the midterms — skipping his own party convention and warning that his refusal to admit Americans are hurting economically is costing them votes.
Politico surveyed Republicans about the GOP midterm convention in Dallas and found 45 of those surveyed do not plan to attend, according to Cleveland.com. One told the outlet: "I didn't want to go anyways."
At the same time, House Republicans back from district meetings say affordability is the top complaint they hear — and that Trump calling those worries a Democratic "hoax," and declaring the problem solved, is making their jobs harder.

Igoe wrote that Republicans' best midterm outcome requires Trump to "talk a lot less and stay off camera" — while conceding that is "never going to happen." He warned the problem will carry into 2028 for Vice President JD Vance.
Rep. Ralph Norman, vice chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, said of Trump's denial that Americans are struggling: "I think he knows different," and warned the White House will "find out" if it keeps ignoring the issue.
Rep. Lauren Boebert said ranchers in her Colorado district are angry at the president.
Rep. Bruce Westerman said the war with Iran has worsened the affordability problem by driving up oil prices.

The Dallas convention goes ahead with a thinned-out guest list, and the open question is how many Republicans in competitive districts will publicly split from Trump's economic framing before Election Day.
Republicans are also split on the underlying argument: whether Trump's messaging is the core liability, or whether Democrats own the blame for inflation. How voters divide responsibility between Trump's policies, the Iran conflict and Biden-era inflation is the variable neither party can control.
