The News

A Russian drone struck a passenger bus in southeastern Ukraine on Wednesday, killing five people and wounding at least seven, the regional governor said.

The attack hit an area close to the frontline, according to Reuters.

It came a day after President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine was testing a new weapon designed to intercept drones and had recorded a successful hit overnight.

Timeline

Sept. 15, 2026

Zelensky says Ukraine is carrying out tests on a new drone-intercepting weapon and reports a successful overnight hit, Reuters reported.

Sept. 15, 2026

In an interview broadcast by CBS News, Zelensky says Russian drones attacked Moldovan airspace twice while he was in the country aboard his aircraft in transit, describing it as part of a campaign to intimidate him and other foreign leaders.

Sept. 16, 2026

A Russian drone attack on a passenger bus near the frontline in Ukraine's southeast kills five and injures at least seven, the regional governor says.

Reactions

Zelensky publicly celebrated the anti-drone test, saying Ukraine had recorded a successful interception overnight.

His claim that Russian drones targeted his plane over Moldova drew pushback from the right. The Conservative Treehouse called the account a previously debunked story, noting the original claim had been attributed to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

Moscow, for its part, accused Denmark of "dangerous" fly-bys near its warships, according to The Independent's live coverage of the war.

What's Next

Ukraine is pushing to field the new interceptor weapon while Russia keeps expanding its long-range drone campaign.

The Japan Times reports Ukraine is racing to counter Moscow's jet-powered drones — faster and more powerful than earlier models — and that there is no clear answer to them yet.

Expect casualty figures from Wednesday's bus strike to change as regional authorities finish their count.

More

The bus attack underscores a pattern in this phase of the war: cheap, mass-produced drones are doing the killing, and both sides are now spending as much effort on shooting them down as on launching them.

Ukraine's interceptor program is the direct answer to that math — a cheaper way to stop a drone than firing an air-defense missile at it.
