Socialist Hong, Crowley Deadlocked in Wisconsin Primary

The News

Wisconsin's Democratic primary for governor was too close to call early Wednesday, with democratic socialist state Rep. Francesca Hong and moderate Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley separated by less than a percentage point.

The race is being watched as a test of the progressive wing's strength inside the Democratic Party.

The winner advances to face Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany in November.

Timeline

Tuesday, Aug. 11

Wisconsin voters cast ballots in the primary alongside contests in Minnesota and South Carolina.

Late Tuesday night

With 75% of votes counted, Crowley and Hong were separated by a margin of less than one point, according to the Washington Examiner.

Early Wednesday

NBC News' Decision Desk and other outlets still rated the race too close to call, with the two candidates trading the lead.

Reactions

Hong, backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, has drawn fire from Republicans over resurfaced social media posts. Fox News Digital reported she had described America as "an abundance of suffering" and called for police abolition in older X posts.

Crowley ran as the establishment-backed moderate in the field.

Wisconsin Democratic Party chair Devin Remiker dodged questions about Hong's past remarks, pivoting instead to attack Tiffany, according to Fox News.

Hong sidestepped a question about why Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had not endorsed her, Breitbart reported.

What's Next

Officials continue counting outstanding ballots to determine the Democratic nominee.

The winner faces GOP Rep. Tom Tiffany in the general election this November.

More

The contest is one of several Democratic primaries this cycle where DSA-aligned candidates have challenged party moderates, testing how far left the party's base is willing to go.
