Somali Man Arrested After UK Migrant Hotel Stabbing

A Somali man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a stabbing at the Stanwell Hotel, a hotel near Heathrow Airport used to house asylum seekers.
Surrey Police were called to the hotel in Town Lane, Stanwell, at around 6.30pm on Saturday following reports of a stabbing.
The victim, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the attack, and urged the public not to speculate.

Reactions
Detective Superintendent Kate Hyder of Surrey Police said: "Due to the nature of the report this evening, armed officers were dispatched to the scene and assisted with the arrest. There remains a police presence in the area while we carry out initial enquiries."
She added: "We understand this incident has caused concern within the local community, and I encourage you to speak to local officers."
The Home Office has previously said it is committed to ending the use of hotels to accommodate asylum seekers and is working toward alternative accommodation.

Surrey Police said further updates would be provided as the investigation develops. The arrested man remains held on suspicion of attempted murder, and the injured man's condition was described as life-threatening.
Separately, plans have been submitted to Spelthorne Borough Council to turn the Stanwell Hotel back into a hotel for business and leisure guests, including passengers using nearby Heathrow. Asylum seekers currently staying there would be expected to move out if the plans are approved, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Under the redevelopment proposals, the Town Lane building would be modernised and refurbished and its room count increased from 56 to 96, with an extended roof on the original building and a single-storey extension added.
Developers said the improvements were intended to "modernise the hotel and secure its future as part of the village economy."
The use of hotels to house asylum seekers has become one of the sharpest flashpoints in Britain's immigration debate, and police said they recognised the incident had unsettled the surrounding community.
