South Dakota Detector Logs Possible Dark Matter Hit

Physicists running a detector a mile beneath South Dakota's Black Hills say they have recorded a single particle interaction that known background sources cannot explain — the most compelling hint yet of dark matter, the invisible substance thought to make up most of the matter in the universe.

The event was logged by the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment, or LZ, at the Sanford Underground Research Facility, a converted gold mine. The detector is managed by the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

The researchers are not claiming a discovery. It is one event.

Timeline

Dark matter was first theorized almost a century ago. Scientists are confident it exists because of its gravitational pull at galactic scales, but it has never been directly detected. Reuters reports ordinary matter — stars, planets, people — accounts for only about 15% of all the matter in the universe.

For the past two years, a collaboration of 250 scientists and engineers from 39 institutions across six countries has been combing through LZ data. The detector uses 10 tons of ultrapure liquid xenon and is tuned to catch a hypothesized dark matter particle called a WIMP — a weakly interacting massive particle.

In that data they found one interaction between a xenon atom and another particle that behaved the way a WIMP is predicted to behave: a collision with the atom's nucleus that transferred a small amount of energy, produced a faint flash of ultraviolet light, and jolted the nucleus forward in what physicists call a nuclear recoil.

On Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026, lead author Dr. Sam Eriksen of the University of Bristol presented the finding at the TeV Particle Astrophysics conference in Japan. Reuters reports the study has been submitted to the journal Physical Review Letters.

Reactions

"Importantly, as it's just a single event, we are not claiming that it is dark matter," Eriksen said. He also called the result something that "could be the first hint of a dark matter observation" and said that after "a huge amount of scientific effort, this is incredibly exciting."

Professor Rick Gaitskell of Brown University said the team is "very intrigued to see this event in the data, in the region where we expect dark matter to show up and the competing backgrounds are very low." He added: "With only one event, we don't want to get ahead of ourselves. We are not claiming to have seen dark matter. But we have seen something interesting that we want to share with the scientific community for their input."

UCLA astrophysicist and study co-author Alvine Kamaha put the caution plainly: "We may be looking at something extraordinary, but we have to be exceptionally rigorous before drawing that conclusion."

What's Next

The number that matters is sigma. Physics treats 5-sigma as the threshold for calling something a discovery. This result sits at 2.6 sigma — roughly a 0.5% chance the event is explained by known backgrounds.

LZ is still running. More data will either push the signal toward 5-sigma or make it fade, and the researchers say they are still working to rule out other explanations. The submitted paper now goes to the wider scientific community for scrutiny.

If the event really was dark matter, the WIMP behind it would carry a mass of at least 200 GeV/c2 — more than 200 times the mass of a proton — and would point to a type of interaction with ordinary matter beyond the simplest model.

The detector's isolation is the whole design. A mile of rock blocks cosmic rays, a water tank and outer detectors screen out stray neutrons, and software is built to reject dark matter mimics.

"There could be millions of dark matter particles passing through our bodies every second, and yet almost none of them will ever interact with an atom in our bodies," Kamaha said. She described dark matter as "the cosmic glue that helped enable the formation of galaxies like our Milky Way."
