Super El Niño Set to Upend US Winter

The News

Federal forecasters say a "very strong" El Niño is building in the equatorial Pacific and could reshape US winter weather, shifting storm tracks, snowfall and the behavior of the polar vortex.

NOAA's Climate Prediction Center puts the odds of a very strong El Niño persisting into 2027 at greater than 90 percent, and gives a 69 percent chance the event exceeds every El Niño on record dating back to 1950.

NASA satellites are already picking up changes in the Pacific that could reach US fishermen before the first cold front does.

What It Could Do to Winter

El Niño typically brings wetter-than-average conditions across the South and less snow around the Great Lakes, interior New England and the Pacific Northwest.

The wild card is the polar vortex — the mass of cold air that spins high over the Arctic each winter and is linked to the jet stream. A strong vortex generally means a milder winter; a weak one lets Arctic air spill south into the central and eastern US.

El Niño tends to weaken the vortex in mid-to-late winter and raises the odds of sudden stratospheric warming events, said Amy Butler, a physicist at NOAA's Chemical Sciences Laboratory. Those events push down to the surface and can lock in weather patterns over the US and Europe for weeks.

Timeline

June 2026:

NASA's PACE satellite observes substantially lower chlorophyll-a concentrations — a marker of phytoplankton, the base of the marine food web — across parts of the central equatorial Pacific compared with neutral conditions in June 2025.

Summer 2026:

Sea surface temperatures in the El Niño region climb for weeks, setting daily records, according to NOAA data, as the pattern strengthens along the equator in the eastern Pacific.

Aug. 15, 2026:

NOAA forecasts the event as "very strong," possibly among the strongest in the modern record. The Boston Globe describes an El Niño "unlike anything seen in centuries." CTV News reports Canada is bracing for a "super El Niño" of its own.

Reactions

Judah Cohen, a polar vortex expert at MIT, said the science on how the two patterns interact is still uncertain and the relationships are not particularly strong. If the vortex holds together this winter, he said, it will be a mild winter overall regardless of El Niño, except possibly along the West Coast. If it weakens and stratospheric warming follows, he said it could bring a repeat of the severe mid-Atlantic winter weather of 2019-2020.

Darryn Waugh, a professor of Earth and planetary sciences at Johns Hopkins University, cautioned against certainty. With the jet stream, the stratospheric polar vortex and El Niño, he said, "It's when this happens, there's an increased probability that something will happen."

Ben Kirtman, dean of the Rosenstiel School at the University of Miami, said the bigger unknown is the backdrop. "This is an El Niño superimposed on top of a pretty big climate change signal," he said. "We don't have a clear understanding how that changes the teleconnections, those relationships. That's an open science question."

The Fish Angle

NASA said its satellites have detected warmer sea surface temperatures, higher sea surface height and falling chlorophyll — the signature of weakened trade winds and deeper warm surface water shutting off the upwelling that feeds phytoplankton.

NOAA research oceanographer Andrew Leising told Newsweek that reduced phytoplankton "definitely can ripple through the ecosystem," because it "is the bottom of the food web and therefore supplies energy to basically everything else." Cold-water species may move north or deeper and grow and reproduce less, he said — while warm-water species such as tunas may show up closer to shore and farther north, which "can actually make for more fishing opportunities on these species than normal years."

Michael Jacox, an oceanographer at NOAA's Southwest Fisheries Science Center, said that along the US West Coast, "the tendency is for El Niño to limit productivity by reducing the availability of nutrients in the surface ocean."

What's Next

NOAA's Climate Prediction Center expects the event to run into 2027, with the vortex's behavior — and the regional winners and losers — not clear until the vortex forms this fall and forecasters can track mid-winter disruptions.

Jacox's caveat is the one to hold onto: "The presence of El Niño doesn't offer any guarantees in terms of impacts. What it does do is shift the odds so that warm, low productivity conditions are more likely. The stronger El Niño is, the more those odds shift, and the more likely we are to see severe impacts."
