Toys R Us Adds 120 Stores; Burlington Expands

The News
Toys R Us is opening 120 new standalone stores across the United States, its biggest expansion in nearly a decade, the company said Thursday.
The openings will bring the chain's standalone US store count to roughly 160, according to the New York Post, the Daily Mail and The Epoch Times.
The retailer filed for bankruptcy in 2017. Cleveland.com and PennLive report the new nationwide push includes curated toy selections, influencer creator studios, candy shops and cafés at select locations.
It is not the only chain adding square footage. Burlington is opening 20 new stores across 12 states this month, and L.L.Bean has reopened a "rebooted" flagship in Freeport, Maine.
The Numbers
120 new Toys R Us stores. About 160 standalone US locations when the expansion is done. 20 new Burlington stores in 12 states. One rebuilt L.L.Bean flagship.

Toys R Us announces it will open 120 stores, its biggest expansion in nearly a decade, citing surging demand from adult customers. Forbes reports the openings are timed for the holiday season and come under the brand's new ownership.
Burlington's expansion arrives with 20 new stores in 12 states and a new store design, Cleveland.com and PennLive report. Forbes reports L.L.Bean's reopened Freeport, Maine flagship is the most visible sign of a deeper corporate transformation.
Reactions
Burlington CEO Michael O'Sullivan said the new locations will offer improved store design alongside brand-name savings, according to Cleveland.com and PennLive.
Coverage of the Toys R Us expansion has focused on who is actually buying. NBC News framed it bluntly: "Some people never seem to grow up." The New York Post credited adults who "didn't wanna grow up," and the Daily Mail attributed the push to a "kidult" boom in which grown-up collectors drive toy sales.
Forbes described L.L.Bean's flagship reopening as moving the brand forward into its next hundred years.
What's Next
The Toys R Us openings are set to land in time for the holiday shopping season, Forbes reports, with the chain heading toward about 160 standalone US stores.
Burlington's 20 stores open this month across 12 states, and the company says more are on the way.
More
The three announcements land together as a counterpoint to years of retail contraction: a chain that went through bankruptcy in 2017 is rebuilding a physical footprint, an off-price retailer is scaling up, and a heritage brand is rebuilding its original store rather than shrinking it.
