Trump Claims Permanent US Control Over Greenland Security
Trump Claims Permanent US Control Over Greenland Security

The News
President Donald Trump announced Friday that the United States has reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland giving Washington "permanent control over security, and all other needs" on the Arctic island.
Trump made the claim in a post on Truth Social. Neither Copenhagen nor Nuuk had immediately confirmed his characterization of the deal, according to Raw Story.
The full terms have not been released. Trump said the US will immediately begin building what he called a "large Military presence" on the island.
What Trump Says Is In It
Trump described it as an "Infinite Life" agreement with no expiration date, and said it costs the United States nothing.
Under the terms he described, no US adversary may establish a base, a military presence, or make sensitive investments in Greenland without written American approval.
The deal covers security. It does not hand the United States sovereignty over Greenland.
Timeline
Trump begins pushing to acquire Greenland, and makes taking control of the territory a central feature of his second term.
Reuters reports, citing two people familiar with the matter, that the United States and Denmark are closing in on a potential deal that would give the US military an expanded presence on the island but would fall well short of outright acquisition.
Trump posts on Truth Social that the US, Denmark and Greenland have entered an agreement granting America permanent control over the island's security and "all other needs."
Reactions
Trump framed the announcement as a win that resolves American concerns about the Arctic island outright, and said the arrangement has no end date and no cost to US taxpayers.
The Danish and Greenlandic governments had not immediately confirmed Trump's description of the agreement, Raw Story reported.
The two people familiar with the talks who spoke to Reuters described something narrower than Trump did — an expanded US military presence well short of acquisition. Reuters reported that account before Trump's post.
What's Next
Trump said the US will move immediately to develop a large military presence in Greenland.
Reuters reported that a formal announcement was possible but not guaranteed in the coming days or weeks.
Open questions remain over what the agreement's text actually grants, how "all other needs" is defined, and whether it requires ratification by Denmark's parliament or Greenland's Inatsisartut legislature.
More
Greenland sits at an Arctic crossroads, and the United States has sought to limit Chinese and Russian influence there.
The parties discussed allowing Greenlandic territory to be used for Golden Dome, Trump's planned missile defense shield.
