Trump, Putin Talk an Hour on Ukraine Deal

The News
President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone for about an hour Tuesday about ending the war in Ukraine, days after US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner carried a revived American peace plan to Moscow and Kyiv.
The two leaders "exchanged views" on the results of that trip, top Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters.
Ushakov said Trump told Putin a swift end to the war "would immediately open up impressive and far-reaching prospects for a full restoration of US-Russian relations."
The eastern Ukrainian region of Donbas remains the central sticking point, with both sides claiming the industrial heartland.
The Europe Assurance
Ushakov also said Putin used the call to promise that Russia is not planning a wider war on the continent: "Given the speculation about Russia's alleged hostile intentions against European states, it was emphasized that we harbor no thought of aggressive plans against Europe."
The assurance follows European officials' warnings about Russian sabotage campaigns on their soil, according to CTV News. The New York Post reported that CIA Director John Ratcliffe visited Moscow last week to warn against any such incursion.
Timeline
Witkoff and Kushner travel to Russia and Ukraine, meeting Putin in Moscow and Zelensky in Kyiv, in a bid to restart negotiations.
Zelensky tells Axios the US is weighing whether the war could be de-escalated over the winter, leading to a peace agreement.
Zelensky says the American envoys presented several "decent ideas" for ending the war.
Trump and Putin hold the roughly hour-long call, the Kremlin confirms.
Reactions
Zelensky said Witkoff and Kushner brought "decent ideas" to the table, per Newsmax.
Kushner has described the proposals as "new." The Financial Times reported that he and Witkoff in fact brought updated versions of earlier US peace proposals, according to the New York Post.
European and US officials are less hopeful. Bloomberg reported that officials in Kyiv's camp are resigned to the war running into 2027, saying the latest American initiative made no headway with Putin.
Writing at RealClearWorld, UnHerd's Bethany Elliott argued Trump no longer has a coherent plan for the war, noting the talks had appeared to stall before the White House returned to the file.
The White House did not respond to a request for comment from the New York Post.
What's Next
Trump was expected to speak with Zelensky later Tuesday, the Kyiv Independent reported.
No date has been announced for a ceasefire, a leaders' meeting, or a next round of talks. Donbas remains unresolved, and the winter de-escalation idea Zelensky described is still just an idea.
More
Witkoff and Kushner have become Trump's two-man channel to both capitals, shuttling between Moscow and Kyiv rather than working through a formal negotiating track. That is what makes the Donbas question decisive: a plan neither Russia nor Ukraine will sign over territory both claim is not a plan, whatever the envoys carry in their briefcases.
