Walmart Finally Accepts Apple Pay Starting Monday
The News
Walmart said Friday it will finally accept tap-to-pay at its checkouts, including Apple Pay and Google Pay, ending one of the longest holdouts in American retail.
The rollout starts Monday, August 24, at select Walmart stores and Sam's Club locations, according to the company's announcement.
Walmart expects tap-to-pay at all US stores and clubs by the end of this year, and at its fuel stations by the middle of 2027.
Shoppers will be able to pay with contactless credit and debit cards or with a phone or smartwatch. Eligible Walmart, Sam's Club and OnePay cards can also be added to digital wallets.
Why It Took So Long
Until now, Walmart customers who wanted to pay by phone had to use the company's own Walmart Pay, which requires scanning a QR code at checkout, or Scan-and-Go at Sam's Club.
Walmart spent years pushing its in-house systems instead of the contactless standard. It was part of CurrentC, a retailer-backed mobile payment venture built as an alternative to Apple Pay, which was shut down in 2016.
Apple says Apple Pay is now accepted at 85% of US retailers.

Reactions
Walmart framed the move as expanding choice rather than a reversal. "Tap to Pay is a great addition to the other payment options already offered like cash, credit card or Walmart Pay," the company said in its announcement, adding that more choice at checkout is "part of a broader effort to make managing and using their money easier."
Tech press read it differently. TechCrunch's Sarah Perez wrote that for Walmart "the decision reads as a defeat," arguing the retailer had bet it could steer customers to its own payment tools and ultimately had to admit it was disadvantaging them. Engadget called it "wild" that it took Walmart this long, noting Apple Pay has existed since 2014 and Google Wallet since 2011.
Axios noted that tap-to-pay had "eluded Walmart customers," who were stuck with QR-code scanning.
What's Next
Watch for the feature to appear store by store after Monday. Walmart has not published a list of which locations go first.
The company's own deadlines are the next markers: every US store and club by December 31, 2026, and fuel stations by the middle of 2027.
More
Walmart is the largest retailer in the country, so the change touches a very large share of American checkout lines. It also means the company's own apps — Walmart Pay and Scan-and-Go — now compete head-to-head with Apple and Google inside Walmart's own stores rather than being the only phone-based option.
