AMLO's Son Says US Revoked His Visa
AMLO's Son Says US Revoked His Visa
The News
Andrés Manuel López Beltrán — son of former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and a senior official in Mexico's ruling Morena party — says the United States has revoked his visa, and he blames the Trump administration.
In a public appeal aimed directly at President Donald Trump, he named Secretary of State Marco Rubio and State Department official Christopher Landau as the men behind the decision, and said there is no evidence he committed any criminal or immoral act.
The US government has not publicly confirmed the revocation or stated a reason. The US Embassy in Mexico declined to comment, citing the confidentiality of visa records under US law. It is not clear from López Beltrán's own account what type of visa was canceled.
Timeline
López Beltrán is elected secretary of organization of Morena, the party his father founded and which now governs Mexico under President Claudia Sheinbaum.
López Beltrán goes public, saying his visa has been revoked and appealing to Trump over the heads of the State Department.
The US Embassy in Mexico declines to comment. Sheinbaum responds publicly, calling the decision political and asking Washington for evidence.
Reactions
López Beltrán framed the revocation as a political attack on his father and on Morena, saying he had been given no evidence of wrongdoing. Breitbart, which described the letter as rage-filled, reported that he accused Rubio and Landau of acting in a "Hitlerian" manner and called the move part of a political witch hunt against his family and his party, and said the document canceled was his tourist visa.
Sheinbaum called the decision "essentially political in nature." She urged the United States to produce evidence but ruled out turning the episode into a diplomatic conflict.
State Department officials, cited by The Independent, say visa revocations of this kind are aimed at people implicated in corruption, narcotics smuggling, or assisting unlawful migration. No such allegation against López Beltrán has been made public.
What's Next
Two questions are unanswered: the specific grounds Washington used, and whether more Morena figures are next. The State Department has said nothing on the record, and visa confidentiality rules mean it may never explain itself publicly.
Sheinbaum has asked for evidence while signaling she will not escalate. López Beltrán's open letter to Trump remains his main public response.
More
The revocation lands amid a broader US crackdown on Mexican politicians alleged to have cartel ties. Ten current and former Mexican officials face a federal drug trafficking case in New York.
Bloomberg reported the episode puts Sheinbaum in a bind — pressed to defend a member of her party's founding family while managing already strained relations with Washington.
