Apple Rebuilds iOS Around $1,999 Folding iPhone

The News
Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first folding phone, at a Sept. 9 event in Cupertino — and rebuilt iOS 27 around it.
The Duo opens to a 7.6-inch inner screen, the largest ever on an iPhone, with a 5.4-inch display on the outside.
It starts at $1,999 for 256GB and runs to $3,199 for a 2TB model. Preorders open Oct. 16; it ships Oct. 23.
It is the first iPhone that can run two apps side by side and the first to work with an Apple Pencil.
The Numbers
$1,999 entry price. $3,199 fully loaded. 7.6 inches inside, 5.4 outside, 3,000 nits max brightness on both screens. Apple claims up to 44 hours of use. Foldables account for just 3% of global smartphone sales, according to Counterpoint Research data cited by GQ.
Timeline
New Apple CEO John Ternus unveils the iPhone Duo at the company's late-summer event at Apple Park, alongside the rest of the new iPhone lineup.
Preorders open, in "star white" and "night sky."
The Duo goes on sale, a month later than the standard iPhones — the same stagger Apple used for the iPhone X in 2017.
A software update adds USB-C Apple Pencil support, bringing iPad markup, drawing and note-taking features to the phone.
Reactions
Apple said the Duo was designed to be "as natural and intuitive as iPad," The Verge reported.
GQ's reviewer, who handled the device at Apple Park, wrote that the Duo is "not something that anyone needs" but concluded: "if you get your hands on an iPhone Duo, you'll sure as hell want to keep holding onto it."
Engadget called it "Apple's most exciting device in a decade," while faulting the two-lens rear camera — "I just wish it had three cameras in back."
CNET's Scott Stein was more skeptical of the hidden inner camera, writing that its stripped-down spec list "concerns me" and that it looks "likely intended for use mainly for FaceTime and video chats."
Netflix, one of a handful of pre-release partners rebuilding apps for the device, told Variety: "When members use Netflix on iOS, they want that same immersive, big-screen feeling to travel with them." Its Duo version "reimagines Billboard, our new playback controls and Clips for the new device."
What's Next
Preorders start Oct. 16 and shipments begin Oct. 23, so the first independent battery and durability tests won't land until late October.
Apple Pencil support arrives later this year in a software update rather than at launch.
The open question is how many outside developers rebuild their apps for the Duo's layouts, or whether the redesigned experience stays limited to Apple's own apps and early partners like Netflix.
More
The software changes are the bigger story than the hinge. In iOS 27, the dock and app menus shift to the side of the screen so buttons stay in thumb reach when the phone is open, and app layouts redraw themselves for the wider outer screen, The Verge and Engadget reported.
Open the Duo partway like a book and iOS 27 moves content away from the fold; fold it back like a tent on a table and it plays video on the outer screen. Apple's StandBy ambient mode now works propped up on either display as a clock, photo frame or weather feed.
Split View lets apps run side by side and be resized on the fly, so users can drag photos between apps. Opened up, the Duo shows two home screens' worth of space.
There are trade-offs. The Duo carries the A20 Pro chip and a titanium frame but only a dual rear camera — a 48-megapixel wide lens and a 2x telephoto — against the Pro models' longer zoom. Face ID is gone, replaced by a Touch ID fingerprint reader mounted on the side where a thumb rests. A fourth camera hides under the inner screen with no listed megapixel count, an f/1.8 aperture, 1080p video and Center Stage, but none of the 4K, cinematic, slow-motion or portrait features of Apple's visible cameras.
At $1,999, the Duo is the most expensive iPhone Apple has made — nearly double last year's iPhone 17 Pro Max, GQ noted. Reviewers agreed the hardware is good; they split on whether the extra screen is worth the money.
