Biden Undergoes Skin Cancer Surgery

The News

Former president Joe Biden recently underwent surgery to remove skin cancer lesions on his head, his spokesperson said Thursday.

Kelly Scully, a spokesperson for Biden, confirmed that the former president recently had Mohs surgery, a procedure that involves cutting away layers of skin until there are no longer signs of cancer.

The confirmation came after Inside Edition released a video showing Biden, 82, shaking hands after exiting a church with what appeared to be a long gash from his scalp to his forehead.

Timeline

Thursday

The Associated Press first reported the former president’s surgery earlier Thursday.

Reactions

At the time, his office said in a statement that the diagnosis “represents a more aggressive form of the disease” but that the cancer appears to be sensitive to hormone therapy, “which allows for effective management.”

It added, “The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.”

More

While Biden was serving as president in 2023, he had a cancerous skin lesion removed from his chest.

The lesion was determined to be basal cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer.

Biden served one term in the White House, pulling out of his reelection campaign in summer 2024 following a halting debate performance.

Earlier this year, Biden revealed he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had metastasized to his bones.
