Cheney-Slayer Hageman Wins Wyoming GOP Senate Primary

Rep. Harriet Hageman won Wyoming's Republican Senate primary Tuesday, putting the woman who ended Liz Cheney's career in Congress one step from the Senate.
The Associated Press called the race at 10:52 p.m. ET, NTD reported. Hageman won the five-way primary in a landslide, beating National Guard veteran Jimmy Skovgard, rancher and whiskey maker Sam Mead, massage therapist Jill Edwards and John Holtz.
She will face Democratic former state Rep. James Byrd in the Nov. 3 general election for the seat of retiring Republican Sen. Cynthia Lummis.
In the reddest state in the country, that makes Hageman the overwhelming favorite. The Cook Political Report rates the race solidly Republican.

Hageman, backed by Trump, defeats Rep. Liz Cheney in Wyoming's Republican House primary. Cheney, the daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney, was one of only two Republicans on the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and had become Trump's most prominent Republican critic.
Lummis announces she will not seek a second term. "I've come to accept that I do not have six more years in me," she said. Trump endorses Hageman for the seat the same month.
Trump endorses Hageman again on Truth Social. "I know Harriet well, and she is a TOTAL WINNER!" he wrote. "Harriet has ALWAYS delivered for Wyoming, and will continue to do so in the United States Senate."
Wyoming votes. AP calls the Republican Senate primary for Hageman at 10:52 p.m. ET and the Democratic primary for Byrd at 10:53 p.m. ET.
Reactions
Byrd, who beat salesman Billy Benavidez for the Democratic nomination, ran his victory speech in Cheyenne straight at cost of living. "We are going to take on the cost of living [and] we're going to take on the affordability," he said, according to NTD. "The price of gas is at the top of my list. We should not have gas that is approaching $5 a gallon."
Byrd told The Epoch Times he knows the odds and is betting on crossover votes. "We've had enough of the crazies," he said. "Bring some moderate people, and if we don't have moderate people, this is where I come in."
Hageman, a fourth-generation Wyomingite now in her second term as the state's lone House member, is campaigning on cutting government spending, election integrity, reining in the surveillance state, protecting the unborn and stopping what she calls U.S. Forest Service mismanagement of forest lands.
What's Next
Hageman vs. Byrd on Nov. 3. Byrd is 72; Hageman is 63. Trump carried Wyoming with 72.3% of the vote in 2024, and every statewide elected office in Wyoming is currently held by a Republican.
Her House seat is also on the ballot. Secretary of State Chuck Gray beat eight competitors to win the Republican primary for the at-large seat, taking 25% to 20% for conservative activist Steve Friess with more than 95% counted, Roll Call reported. Gray faces Democrat Lisa Kinney, a former state senator, for a seat Republicans have held since Dick Cheney flipped it in 1978.

Trump's endorsement did not carry the whole night in Wyoming. In the race to succeed term-limited Gov. Mark Gordon, Republican state Sen. Eric Barlow beat Trump-endorsed state Superintendent of Public Instruction Megan Degenfelder, 45% to 30% with more than 95% of the vote in, according to the AP. Barlow will face military veteran Kenneth Casner in November.
The same night, two Trump-backed House candidates lost primaries in Florida: Rep. Cory Mills and conservative activist Catalina Lauf.
It is an unusually large turnover for Wyoming — the first time in 32 years the state has open races for governor, Senate and its House seat in the same cycle.
