FBI Arrests Albany Woman Over Capitol Bomb Plot

The FBI arrested an Albany woman accused of plotting an ISIS-inspired bombing of the New York State Capitol, federal officials said Thursday.
Jessica Bowie, 35, is charged with attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization, according to a federal criminal complaint filed Thursday.
Prosecutors allege Bowie intended to strike the Capitol in Albany while state senators were meeting, targeting the lawmakers inside.
Timeline
About five years ago, according to prosecutors, Bowie converted to Islam and adopted the name "Aisha Saif."
In July, prosecutors say, she began planning an attack on the Capitol, then spent weeks conducting reconnaissance of the building.
Prosecutors allege she discussed hiding a bomb inside a DoorDash delivery bag, sought a firearm, and bought materials for an explosive device.
On Thursday, federal officials announced her arrest and the filing of the complaint charging her with attempting to provide material support to ISIS.
Reactions
Federal officials said the plot was thwarted before any attack took place, describing Bowie as inspired by ISIS and saying she had pledged allegiance to the group.
Newsweek reported it had contacted the FBI and the office of Gov. Kathy Hochul for comment.
What's Next
The case proceeds under the federal criminal complaint filed Thursday. Bowie has not been convicted of any crime, and the allegations against her are untested in court.
Key questions still open: whether Bowie acted alone or was in contact with anyone directing her, and how far along the explosive device was when agents moved in.
