The News

Hunter Biden is launching a meme coin built on the scandal that made his laptop famous — and aiming it squarely at President Trump.

The former first son announced $LAPTOP on Monday through an exclusive Wall Street Journal report and a post on his X account, saying the token will debut Wednesday, Sept. 9, on Coinbase's Base blockchain network.

Some 20% of the supply will be sent free, in two batches, to crypto wallets belonging to people who lost money on $TRUMP, the president's meme coin, along with subscribers to Biden's Substack and a mailing list curated by his friend, video journalist Andrew Callaghan, according to the Journal.

The Numbers

One billion tokens will be issued in total. Biden and his fellow founders will hold 30% of them, and cannot sell for six months, with the allotment becoming fully available over two years. The remaining 20% is earmarked for charity and liquidity needs — distributions to exchanges and market makers, plus a foundation to cover the project's legal, accounting, administrative and compliance costs.

As much as 30% of the supply could be permanently destroyed — "burned," in crypto parlance — if certain events happen: a Democrat winning the White House in 2028, bitcoin hitting a new record high, or $LAPTOP passing the fully diluted valuation of Trump's coin. If those outcomes don't occur inside the allotted time frames, the corresponding coins are donated to charity instead.

Timeline

Oct. 14, 2020

The New York Post first reports on the contents of Hunter Biden's abandoned laptop, less than three weeks before the presidential election. Twitter blocks users from sharing the links and locks the Post out of its account for two weeks; Facebook reduces distribution.

Days later

Fifty-one former intelligence officials suggest the story bore the hallmarks of a Russian information operation, while acknowledging they had no evidence of Kremlin involvement. Forensic examinations later authenticated thousands of the emails, and federal investigators matched material on the laptop with data obtained independently from Biden's iCloud account.

January 2025

Trump's $TRUMP meme coin hits a record $73.43. It crashed roughly 36 hours after launch, largely because of the competing launch of $MELANIA, according to The New York Times.

July 2026

A report by Democratic staff on the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, citing blockchain analysis, finds nearly 1 million retail traders lost an estimated $3.8 billion on $TRUMP. Other analyses put losses among losing traders at $3.2 billion to $4.5 billion.

Sept. 7, 2026

The Wall Street Journal reports the $LAPTOP project, citing people familiar with it. Biden confirms it on X with a video montage of figures from Fox News host Sean Hannity to Trump himself saying the words "Hunter Biden's laptop."

Sept. 9, 2026

$LAPTOP is scheduled to go live on Base.

Reactions

Biden has recently emerged as an outspoken crypto booster, calling decentralized digital currencies the "inevitable future" in posts on X. His launch video was built entirely out of clips of his critics repeating the laptop's name.

The New York Post, which broke the original laptop story, framed the coin as Biden "making light of" the scandal and said it has sought comment from Hunter Biden and the White House. Mediaite described the token as an ode to the laptop designed to troll Trump and his MAGA supporters.

The Journal was blunt about the asset class itself: meme coins began as a joke, and "buyers of those coins almost always lose nearly all of their investments."

What's Next

$LAPTOP is set to begin trading Wednesday on Base. The open price, and how fast the initial speculative burst settles, are the first tests.

The imitators arrived first. At least 14 copycat LAPTOP tokens appeared on four other networks within an hour of the Journal's report, trading $6.9 million between them, according to the crypto publication The Defiant.

Two open questions hang over the project: who verifies when the burn conditions are triggered, and how regulators treat a token distribution routed through a political mailing list and a Substack subscriber base.

More

Trump's own coin remains the benchmark Biden is measuring against. $TRUMP recently traded around $2.27 — nearly 97% below its January 2025 record.

CIC Digital, a Trump Organization affiliate, and Fight Fight Fight LLC together controlled 80% of the original 1 billion-token $TRUMP allocation, according to the coin's official disclosures, and Trump-linked entities also receive trading revenue. Mediaite reported the president pocketed $600 million from the venture.

Meme coins have no intrinsic value. Buying sprees are typically driven by celebrity involvement or novelty, and the tokens frequently plunge after an initial burst of speculative trading.
