Kremlin Talks End Without Breakthrough as Strikes Pause

Vladimir Putin met Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner at the Kremlin for more than three hours Saturday and sent them away with a three-day pause on strikes against Kyiv — and nothing else. The talks ended with no announced breakthrough, no framework, and no public agenda.

President Trump's envoys landed in Moscow on Saturday morning and were driven to the Kremlin for closed-door talks with the Russian president, the Associated Press reported. The meeting ran more than three hours and ended, in the AP's words, "without announcements of any breakthroughs."

Putin's foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov, told reporters afterward that the talks were constructive, frank and useful, and conducted with "the utmost openness and trust." He named no specific outcomes. He told the Japan Times the Americans "outlined a number of ideas regarding possible avenues for a settlement," but would not say what those ideas were.

The one concrete thing to come out of the day was a pause over the two capitals. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russia's state news agency Tass that "Putin has ordered that no strikes be carried out against Kyiv for three days, starting at midnight today." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine would reciprocate: "From now through the end of Saturday, as well as on Sunday and Monday, Ukraine is ready to refrain from strikes on Moscow, and we expect the Russians to do the same regarding Kyiv."

Putin gave the envoys no ground on the war itself. He told them Russia is making "real progress" on the battlefield, that he is confident of achieving his goals, and that any settlement must address "all the root causes of the conflict," according to Ushakov's account to the Japan Times. At the top of the meeting he asked Kushner and Witkoff to pass his warm wishes and gratitude to Trump and called the situation in Ukraine "not simple," per the AP; Reuters rendered the same phrase as "difficult."

Axios reported that Putin told the two men he has "full trust" in U.S. mediation between Russia and Ukraine, and that the envoys' goal is to restart direct Russia-Ukraine negotiations, which have been suspended for six months.

Ushakov added one detail that had nothing to do with the war: "Economic issues and potentially large, mutually beneficial joint projects for Russia and America were discussed in considerable detail."

What Was Not Agreed

This is not a ceasefire, and no one in the room called it one. What Peskov described is an order to stop hitting one city — Kyiv — for three days, matched by a Ukrainian pledge not to hit Moscow through Monday. The AP put it plainly: both leaders "agreed to pause strikes on each other's capitals while the talks took place."

Everywhere else, the war ran on schedule Saturday. Russian attacks killed five workers and wounded five others at an industrial facility in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region, regional military administration head Oleksandr Hanzha said, describing the dead as "a locksmith, an electrician, a plumber and a machinist. People of peaceful professions." One more person was killed and five injured in strikes on Dnipro and nearby Pidhorodne. A Russian drone hit a house in Chuhuiv, in the Kharkiv region, killing a 19-year-old woman, an 11-year-old boy and a 45-year-old man. Two more people were killed in the Bucha district of the Kyiv region. In Russia's Belgorod region, two people were killed and three wounded by Ukrainian attacks.

Also missing from Saturday's readouts: any movement on the substance. No settlement terms were made public. No date was set for resumed direct talks between Moscow and Kyiv. Ushakov would not describe the American ideas, and Putin's insistence on "all the root causes of the conflict" is the same maximalist framing that has stalled the process for months.
