The News

Rep. Nancy Mace, a South Carolina Republican, called for the "public execution" of Lindsay Clancy — the mother who killed her three young children — during an interview with TMZ DC, Mediaite reported.

Mace's remark, framed by Newsweek as a call for the death penalty in the case, was picked up within hours by outlets across the spectrum, from The Hill to Citizen Free Press.

Mediaite described the sit-down as a "bonkers" interview.

Timeline

Sept. 15, 2026

Mediaite publishes the first account of the TMZ DC interview, reporting that Mace called for Clancy's "public execution."

Sept. 15, 2026

Citizen Free Press and The Hill follow with their own reports on the comment.

Sept. 15, 2026

Newsweek reports the remark as Mace saying Clancy should face public execution, putting the death penalty question back in front of a national audience.

Reactions

Mace is the only figure quoted in the four reports reviewed by The Frank. She used the phrase "public execution" in the TMZ DC interview.

Coverage split on tone rather than fact. Mediaite, a center-rated outlet, called the interview "absolutely bonkers." Newsweek reported the comment straight, as a death-penalty demand. Citizen Free Press, on the right, ran it as breaking news without commentary.

No response from Clancy's defense team, prosecutors, or Mace's office appeared in those reports.

What's Next

Mace has not walked the comment back in any of the reports reviewed. Expect her office to be pressed on whether she was speaking literally, and expect the remark to follow her into her next round of interviews.

The Frank is checking the full transcript of the TMZ DC interview and the current posture of Clancy's case, and will update this story.

More

A sitting member of Congress calling for a public execution is not a routine death-penalty argument. Public executions have not been carried out in the United States in generations, and Congress has no role in state murder prosecutions.

The Frank is reporting only what the four sources in this story support: the words Mace used, where she said them, and who she said them about.
