Mangione Pleads Guilty, Admits He Shot Thompson

The plea
Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty Friday to federal stalking charges in the December 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, and for the first time described in open court how he planned and carried out the shooting.
"I shot Mr Thompson," Mangione said, according to The Guardian, which reported he walked through his planning and the killing itself. Mangione, 28, admitted he 3-D printed the gun he used and trailed Thompson before shooting him outside a Manhattan hotel, per Fox News and Yahoo News. Snopes reported he told the court he acted after years of "severe pain from a broken back."
The plea covers two federal counts of stalking with intent to kill.

Thompson's widow, Paulette Thompson, came face to face with Mangione in court for the first time, Fox News reported. The Independent reported that the mood in the courtroom — energetic before the hearing, with Mangione supporters present — turned somber when Thompson's family appeared and wept together as he confessed.
Bruce Thompson, the brother of the slain executive's father, said afterward that he hopes Mangione "gets what he deserves," the New York Post reported.

What's still open
The federal plea does not end the case. Mangione still faces state murder charges in New York, and The Independent reported he is scheduled to go to trial on those charges Sept. 8.

The Guardian called the plea a dramatic twist in the federal case with the state charges still pending. The New York Post reported that the state case now "hangs by a thread," quoting the assessment that "the loser here is the Manhattan DA."
