NATO Jet Downs Drone Over Lithuania
The News
A NATO fighter jet shot down a drone over southern Lithuania shortly after midnight Tuesday, Lithuania's National Crisis Management Centre said, after the aircraft violated Lithuanian airspace and triggered an air raid alert.
The drone came down near the village of Pratkunai. Lithuanian authorities said it most likely crossed in from Belarus.
It is the first drone shot down over Lithuanian soil, according to Wire's reporting summary of the incident.

Thirty minutes passed between the public phone alert and the drone's destruction. Warnings went out simultaneously to phones in Vilnius, Trakai and Elektrėnai.

Reactions
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda called the swift intercept vital, pointing to intensifying Russian aggression against Ukraine.
Coverage split on framing. Reuters and other center outlets stuck to the intercept itself and NATO's standing Baltic patrol role. Right-leaning outlets including the Daily Mail and The Sun emphasized Belarus as the entry point and the emergency phone warnings sent to residents.
Human Events went a different direction entirely, leading on a separate earlier episode in which Lithuanian authorities closed an airport and scrambled a NATO jet after mistaking a flock of birds on radar for drones.
What's Next
Authorities have not confirmed who owned or operated the drone. That determination is ongoing.
NATO Baltic Air Defence patrols over Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania continue as before.
It is unclear whether Lithuania or NATO will release physical evidence recovered from the wreckage.

Stray drones have repeatedly crossed into NATO territory as Russia and Ukraine expand long-range strike campaigns. Ukraine has attributed some of those strays to Russian electromagnetic interference knocking drone navigation off course.
Whether this drone was a stray military aircraft or something else has not been established.
