NATO Jets Shoot Down Drone Over Latvia

Fighter jets flying a NATO air defense mission shot down a drone that entered the airspace of Latvia — a NATO and European Union member — early Friday, Latvia's armed forces said on X.

Russia shot down 15 drones over its Leningrad region — which borders Finland and Estonia and includes St. Petersburg — regional governor Alexander Drozdenko said on Telegram, per Reuters.

Latvia's armed forces confirmed the shootdown and the end of the alert in their own posts, but withheld details on the drone's type and origin. No government has been publicly blamed.
Finland framed its Baltic Sea restrictions as precautionary, tied to the possibility of drones in the area.
Reuters reports that Russia's northern NATO neighbors have been tightening security around dams, power plants and natural gas infrastructure, driven by concern in those capitals that Moscow could stage a "false flag" attack using Ukrainian drones.

Latvia is expected to identify the drone and its origin as its military completes the assessment — the finding will determine whether Riga treats this as spillover from the war next door or as a deliberate incursion worth raising with allies.
Finland's restricted zones in the eastern Gulf of Finland are temporary and will be lifted when its defense forces judge the risk has passed.
