NOAA: 69% Odds El Nino Breaks All Records

NOAA's Climate Prediction Center says the El Niño now building in the Pacific has a 69% chance of becoming the strongest on record, a report released Thursday, Aug. 13, said.

The same update puts the odds above 90% that the event reaches "very strong" status during the fall and winter of 2026-27, according to the Climate Prediction Center report as described by USA TODAY.

For Americans, the practical stakes are a quieter Atlantic hurricane season, a wetter winter across the southern tier of the country, and a milder one from the Pacific Northwest to the Great Lakes.

The Numbers

Sea-surface temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific ran more than 3.6 degrees above average over the past month, the Climate Prediction Center said — the threshold that qualifies an event as "very strong."

NOAA forecasters expect the anomaly in the benchmark Niño region to exceed 2.5 degrees Celsius (about 4.5 degrees Fahrenheit) at its peak, measured over a three-month span to strip out short-term wobbles, CNN reported.

No El Niño in the modern record has run warmer than 4.5 degrees above baseline, the Los Angeles Times reported. The 69% figure is the chance this one reaches or passes that mark.

NOAA also uses a newer yardstick, the Relative Oceanic Niño Index, which discounts the long-term warming of the background ocean. The record on that index was set in 1982-83 at 4.32 degrees above baseline, per the Los Angeles Times. Even with that handicap applied, CNN reported, this event is on track to be unprecedented.

For October through December, the Climate Prediction Center forecasts a 95% chance the event is "very strong" and a 5% chance it is merely "strong."

What It Means for the US

El Niño typically boosts hurricane activity in the Pacific basin and suppresses it in the Atlantic. That has held this year, USA TODAY reported — the Pacific has been active and the Atlantic quiet, though the Atlantic is picking up as the season approaches its peak.

Beyond hurricanes, El Niño usually has little effect on US summer weather, NOAA says. It is the colder months where it dominates: the southern third of the country typically sees wetter-than-average conditions, while the northern third sees raised odds of below-normal precipitation.

"El Niño winters are typically warmer across the continental United States, especially from the Pacific Northwest to the Great Lakes," Matthew Rosencrans, NOAA's lead hurricane seasonal forecaster, said in an email to USA TODAY. He added that the warmth can reach farther down the West Coast and into the Southeast, but those signals are "much less certain."

California officials are bracing for a wet and potentially destructive winter, the Los Angeles Times reported. Of the three other powerful El Niños since 1950 — 1982-83, 1997-98 and 2015-16 — two brought above-average rain to Southern California. The 2015-16 event did not, despite being very strong in the ocean, and was instead blamed for record beach erosion along the coast.

The previous intensity record-holder, and the event NOAA now expects this one to exceed.

July 2026:

Global average surface temperature ranked among the hottest Julys in a record going back to 1850, tying July 2024, according to NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information.

Aug. 13, 2026:

The Climate Prediction Center releases the update, raising the forecast from "among the largest El Niño events in the historical record" to a 69% chance of the strongest since 1950.

October-December 2026:

The window in which NOAA puts a 95% chance on a "very strong" event, with peak intensity expected in late fall and early winter.

January-March 2027:

The "prime season for impacts" on Southern California rain and snow, Climate Prediction Center ENSO team lead Michelle L'Heureux told the Los Angeles Times.

Reactions

"This is a genuinely remarkable event," University of California climate scientist Daniel Swain said in a YouTube briefing this week. "We're already at record-breaking or record-tying territory now, and we're expected to skyrocket."

The Climate Prediction Center itself hedged. "With an event of this magnitude, the chances of experiencing impacts consistent with El Niño are larger, but they are not guaranteed," its report said. NOAA forecasters cautioned that a record-strong event does not mean markedly worse impacts are guaranteed in the places usually affected.

L'Heureux said the event's shape is otherwise ordinary. "I don't see anything atypical about the starting season or potential duration of this El Niño," she said in an email to USA TODAY, noting the predicted seven-month run is not unusually long. She told the Los Angeles Times that a reading at or above 4.5 degrees "has never happened in our historical record dating back to 1950."

Alexander Gershunov, a research meteorologist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, told the Los Angeles Times the forecast "is honing in on a strong El Niño, and possibly an unprecedented one."

On labels: "super" and "Godzilla" are media and scientist shorthand, not official terms. Climate Prediction Center experts use "very strong," USA TODAY reported.

What's Next

The Climate Prediction Center says the event will keep strengthening through the end of the year, with its influence on Northern Hemisphere weather peaking in fall and winter. NOAA's winter outlook leans heavily on the ENSO cycle, making this forecast the central input for what Americans should expect from December onward.

The economic tab is the open question. The 1982-83 El Niño led to $4.1 trillion in global income losses and the 1997-98 event about $5.7 trillion, according to a 2023 study cited by USA TODAY. "The current forecasts imply this could be the costliest El Niño on record," said Justin Mankin, a Dartmouth geography associate professor who studies El Niño's economic impacts.

Global temperature records are also in play. Because of the event's strength, CNN reported, it is virtually certain that 2027 will set a record for the hottest year, and possible that 2026 will as well.

El Niño is a natural pattern in which surface waters in the central and eastern tropical Pacific run warmer than average and the usual east-to-west trade winds weaken or reverse. That heat moves into the atmosphere through clouds and heavy rain, shifting weather worldwide — drought in Indonesia and Australia, flooding in parts of South America.

Those effects are already showing up. L'Heureux said drier-than-average conditions have developed across Indonesia, India, Central America and the Horn of Africa, with wetter-than-average conditions in parts of Chile.

The wild card is the baseline. No El Niño this intense has ever occurred against a background climate this warm, which experts told CNN makes the impacts harder to predict than usual.
