Four of the biggest artificial intelligence services went down at the same time Thursday morning, leaving thousands of users staring at error messages.
OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude, Google's Gemini and xAI's Grok were all reporting problems, according to outage tracker Downdetector.
USA Today reported more than 38,000 users had flagged issues with ChatGPT as of 11 a.m. ET on Sept. 3. The New York Post reported OpenAI, Anthropic and Google were each grappling with service problems.
Timeline
Downdetector begins logging failures across Claude and Grok, per reporting cited by Wire from the New York Post, ZeroHedge and Newsweek. Reports on OpenAI surge later in the morning, with roughly 80 percent of complaints pointing at the ChatGPT interface itself.
The New York Post publishes that ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are all down as thousands of users report outages.
Axios reports a "widespread AI outage underway," citing Downdetector data on ChatGPT, Claude and Grok.
Vice reports the three services are down for thousands of users, writing that anyone who relies on AI at work is "probably having a bad day right now."
Reactions
Users hitting the services got blunt error text. ZeroHedge quoted the message returned to some: "This model is temporarily unavailable. Please try a different model."
Anthropic said it had identified the cause and was working on a fix, listing five affected Claude models. Google's Gemini reported trouble serving recently created API keys, including keys used through OpenAI-compatible libraries.
OpenAI and Google both said they were investigating. Neither gave a restoration timeline.
What's Next
No company had published an estimated time to full restoration as of the latest reporting Thursday.
Whether the four failures share a single cause — a common cloud provider, for instance — or are coincidental has not been established by any source.

Smaller clusters of complaints hit OpenAI's Codex tool, its login system and its mobile app, according to the reporting compiled by Wire — a sign of a broad interruption rather than one isolated product failure.
The scale is what makes this unusual. These tools are now wired into developer APIs, corporate software and consumer apps, so a simultaneous stumble by four of the largest providers takes a lot of ordinary work offline with it.
