Poland Foils Russian Plot to Kill American

The News

Poland says it stopped a Russian plot to assassinate a Ukrainian American citizen in Warsaw, arresting a Russian national who Polish officials say was recruited by Russia's secret services.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the case Thursday and called it unprecedented — the first time, he said, that Russia has sought to attack an American citizen in another NATO country.

Poland's intelligence minister, Tomasz Siemoniak, said U.S. services cooperated in the operation and described the target as a U.S. citizen "of Ukrainian origin."

Timeline

Aug. 7, 2026:

Polish authorities arrest the Russian citizen accused of preparing the killing, according to Poland's account of the case.

Aug. 13, 2026:

Tusk goes public, saying the plot was disrupted before it could be carried out and that the intended victim "was uncomfortable for the Putin regime."

Aug. 13, 2026:

Siemoniak confirms American intelligence cooperation in the operation. Polish officials say they have no further details to release for now.

Reactions

Tusk framed the arrest as a threshold moment for the alliance, saying it marks the first known Russian attempt on an American citizen on the territory of another NATO member.

Siemoniak credited joint work with U.S. services for detecting and stopping the plan, and identified the target only as an American of Ukrainian origin.

The Russian Foreign Ministry had not responded to a request for comment as of publication.

What's Next

Polish officials said they did not immediately have more information to make public, leaving open whether Warsaw will release evidence or charge the suspect publicly.

Unanswered: who the targeted Ukrainian American is, why Moscow allegedly viewed that person as a problem, and exactly what role U.S. intelligence played in breaking up the plan.

Also unresolved is whether Russia responds formally, and whether Washington or NATO treats the case as an attack on a member state's territory.

More

The four wire reports on the case — from PBS NewsHour, CTV News, The Independent and Yahoo News — all rest on the Polish government's account. No independent confirmation of the plot's details has been published, and Poland has not named the suspect or the target.
