Report: Weiss Ordered CBS 9/11 Headline on El-Sayed

The News
CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss "personally directed" that the September 11 attacks be worked into the headline of a story about Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, according to a report cited Monday by Mediaite.
The August 31 CBS story ran under the headline "For Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, Sept. 11 commemoration invites scrutiny of past remarks." CBS later altered the headline without a public explanation.
The story examined deleted social media posts by El-Sayed, who would be the first Muslim U.S. senator if he wins in November.
Timeline
El-Sayed posted two messages, later deleted, comparing COVID-19 death tolls to the death toll of the September 11 attacks. Media Matters notes that then-Surgeon General Jerome Adams, then-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and President Trump drew the same comparison that year.
El-Sayed's campaign told Politico he had deleted all tweets posted before July 2023 "to prevent any old posts from being taken out of context."
CBS News publishes its report tying the coming 9/11 anniversary to scrutiny of El-Sayed's past remarks. Criticism is immediate, and the headline is changed.
Mediaite reports that Weiss herself directed the inclusion of 9/11 in the headline.
Reactions
Media Matters, on the left, called the piece "blatant Islamophobia" and a "bizarre attempt" to tie El-Sayed to the attacks, describing it as the latest evidence of a rightward shift at CBS News under Weiss. Raw Story reported that critics online called the headline "absolutely disgusting." Jezebel wrote that Weiss's CBS had "hit a new low."
Conservative outlets took the opposite view. Townhall said the framing cast El-Sayed as "the real victim of 9/11." Twitchy argued the CBS premise — that El-Sayed may face increased political attacks as the anniversary nears — was simply true. The Daily Wire and Hot Air both said the deleted posts, and the scrubbing of his pre-2023 timeline, are fair game for a Senate candidate.
On CNN Monday, Republican strategist David Urban grew emotional during a tense on-air exchange over 9/11 and El-Sayed, according to Mediaite.
El-Sayed has also drawn fire over his association with streamer Hasan Piker, who said America "deserved" 9/11 before retracting the remark. El-Sayed's campaign has called Republican Rep. Mike Rogers' characterizations of him "bad-faith lies."
What's Next
The 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks falls in less than two weeks, in the middle of El-Sayed's general election fight against Rogers.
CBS News has not explained publicly why the headline was changed or who ordered the change. The network's editorial direction under Weiss — and under owner Paramount Skydance — remains under scrutiny from staff and outside critics.
More
The Frank has not independently verified the report that Weiss personally directed the headline; the claim is attributed to reporting cited by Mediaite. CBS News has not publicly responded to it.
