Senate Candidate Jake Lang Arrested After Minneapolis Rally

Senate Candidate Jake Lang Arrested After Minneapolis Rally

The News

Far-right activist and Republican U.S. Senate candidate Jake Lang was arrested in Minneapolis on Saturday after police said two vehicles associated with him drove onto a sidewalk toward a crowd gathered outside City Hall.

The Minneapolis Police Department said in a Facebook post that Lang and all other occupants of both vehicles were arrested on probable cause riot, and that both vehicles were impounded.

The incident followed a rally Lang had organized downtown that drew counterprotesters.

Timeline

Jan. 6, 2021:

Lang takes part in the riot at the U.S. Capitol. He is charged in connection with it and spends several years in pretrial detention.

January 2025:

President Donald Trump pardons him. Since his release he has organized demonstrations, spoken at rallies and launched a Republican campaign for a U.S. Senate seat in Florida, focusing on immigration, Islam and January 6 issues.

Saturday, about 11:50 a.m. local time:

Police say Lang arrives near Minneapolis City Hall with supporters traveling in two vehicles.

Minutes later:

Police say both vehicles drive onto the sidewalk in front of City Hall toward people gathered there. Officers intervene and direct the vehicles out of the area.

Later Saturday:

Officers track the vehicles and conduct traffic stops with help from the Minnesota State Patrol and Bloomington police. Everyone in both vehicles, including Lang, is arrested on probable cause riot. Police say additional arrests were made near City Hall.

Saturday evening:

Hennepin County jail records show Lang booked into custody, Fox 9 reported. Authorities have announced no formal charges beyond the probable cause riot arrest.

Reactions

The Minneapolis Police Department laid out its account publicly on Facebook the same day, describing the vehicles driving onto the sidewalk toward the crowd before officers stepped in.

Videos from the scene shared on social media and by local news outlets showed tensions between the rally participants and counterprotesters as police worked to separate the two groups.

Reports published Saturday evening carried no comment from Lang or his Senate campaign.

What's Next

No formal charges had been filed as of Saturday evening; Lang was held on a probable cause riot arrest, which is not itself a charging decision.

Others arrested in the two vehicles and near City Hall face the same posture. The impounded vehicles remain in police custody.

More

Lang first drew national attention for his role on January 6, 2021, and became a fixture in conservative and far-right political circles after his pardon. His arrest lands while he is running for the Senate in Florida — roughly 1,500 miles from the Minneapolis sidewalk where police say the vehicles turned toward the crowd.
