Teen Shot Dead at Bakersfield High School Game

A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed during the season-opening football game at Independence High School in Bakersfield, California, on Friday night.

Bakersfield police said officers were called to reports of shots fired at the school after 8 p.m. on August 21, 2026, and found the boy with gunshot wounds. He was taken to Kern Medical and pronounced dead.

Police said the shooting happened south of the football field, inside the gates of the stadium, while the game was being played. No arrest has been made.

What Police Say Happened

Bakersfield Police Sergeant Eric Celedon said the preliminary investigation points to a fight, not a targeted attack on the crowd.

"We know that families look forward to coming out here every Friday night and seeing their kids play on this field," Celedon said. "Based on our preliminary investigation, we believe this began as an isolated incident that begin as an altercation between a group of individuals, which ultimately resulted in the shooting."

Police said there is no threat to the community, and that there is limited, if any, suspect information at this time. The victim has not been publicly identified.
