The News

President Trump nominated Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas) to be the next U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia on Monday, handing a plum diplomatic post to a Texas Republican who lost his Senate primary earlier this year.

Hunt, 44, is a West Point graduate and former Army Apache helicopter pilot who spent two years as a diplomatic liaison officer in the kingdom after eight years in uniform.

The nomination was one of 40 sent to the Senate on Monday, less than two months before the midterms decide control of the chamber.

Why It Matters

Saudi Arabia is a U.S. strategic partner, and the posting carries added weight with the region unsettled: Houthi attacks tied to Iran have disrupted Saudi oil exports and pushed the kingdom to shut down a key pipeline.

There is also a math problem at home. If Hunt gives up his House seat, Speaker Mike Johnson's razor-thin majority gets thinner.

Timeline

Earlier in 2026

Hunt runs for Senate in Texas and loses in the opening round of the Republican primary, finishing behind Sen. John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Reactions

Hunt issued a statement on the nomination, and right-leaning coverage — the Washington Examiner among it — leaned on his regional credentials: the Army service, the Apache cockpit, the two years as a diplomatic liaison in the kingdom.

Politico and Political Wire framed the pick around politics instead, noting the nomination lands in a batch of 40 with the midterms weeks away and Republican control of the Senate on the line.

The outlets agree on the underlying facts. They disagree only on what the story is about.

What's Next

The Senate has just three weeks in session before recessing until after the November election, so the calendar — not the politics — may decide how fast a confirmation hearing gets scheduled.

The other open question is Hunt's House seat. He could resign, or he could hold it until his term expires in January rather than hand Johnson an early vacancy.

More

Hunt's path to the nomination ran through a defeat. His Senate bid ended in the first round of the Texas GOP primary against two of the biggest names in state Republican politics, and the ambassadorship gives him a landing spot in a country he already knows professionally.
