Update: Giuliani Released from Hospital
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani walked out of the hospital on Monday, just two days after he was badly injured in a freak car accident in New Hampshire, as President Trump announced he would be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Giuliani, 81, was discharged from the hospital Monday afternoon — earlier than expected — after suffering fractured vertebrae and left the building on his own two feet, his son Andrew Giuliani revealed.
“He’s in a lot of pain,” Andrew told WABC the same day. “But there are few tougher than Rudy Giuliani.”
On Saturday, the day of the crash, the younger Giuliani revealed that for 90 minutes he was “imagining the worst” — but now, the former mayor is “up and moving around” and has started physical therapy.
The political scion further revealed a discussion he had with Trump, who announced he will honor Rudy with the vaunted Presidential Medal of Freedom.
“You know, the Medal of Freedom is the greatest honor,” Giuliani recounted Trump saying Monday.
“For everything your father did for New York City, for going after the mob, for his leadership on September 11th, and… for being right about everything over the last five years, I want to award him the Medal of Freedom,” Andrew Giuliani recounted of Trump’s comments.
In a Truth Social post Monday afternoon, the president announced Giuliani — whose steady hand as mayor during the 9/11 terror attacks earned nationwide acclaim — would soon be honored by the White House.
“I am pleased to announce that Rudy Giuliani, the greatest Mayor in the history of New York City, and an equally great American Patriot, will receive THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM, our Country’s highest civilian honor,” Trump said of his friend and one-time personal lawyer.
New Hampshire State Police on Monday also released more details on the events that led up to the crash after the ex-mayor and former Trump lawyer had pulled over to the side of the Interstate to help a woman.
Giuliani was the passenger in a rented Ford Bronco driving along Interstate 93 in Manchester when he said he was flagged down by a woman who had been a victim of domestic violence on the southbound side, according to state cops and Michael Ragusa, head of security for Giuliani.
He and his driver, identified as longtime spokesman Theodore Goodman, pulled over to render aid, called 911 and waited for police to arrive.
After cops arrived, the pair left the woman and returned to the highway — this time driving on the northbound side.
They were then struck from behind “almost directly across from the scene” of the reported domestic violence incident where officers were still responding, according to a New Hampshire State Police release.
The Bronco was hit by a Honda HR-V traveling at a high rate of speed, sending both cars careening into the median, police said.
Cops identified the driver of the Honda as 19-year-old Lauren Kemp of Concord, who did not respond to a request for comment by The Post.
The crash sent Goodman, Conrad, and Giuliani to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, cops said. No charges were filed in the incident.
Giuliani suffered fractured vertebrae and multiple cuts and bruises to his left arm and lower leg, Ragusa said Sunday.
The crash “was not a targeted attack” and was “entirely unrelated” to the domestic violence incident, the security head added.
