VSU Shooting Suspect Caught; Police Hunt More Gunmen

The News
The arrest
A 19-year-old is in custody over the shooting that wounded five people at Virginia State University early Saturday — and police say he was not the only person who fired.
Harris is being held without bond at the Chesterfield County jail and is due in state court Monday to face four counts of malicious wounding and four counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, the AP reported. It could not be immediately determined whether he has an attorney, and the AP said efforts to reach his family by phone were unsuccessful. Police said Harris is not a student at the university.
Police are still looking for other shooters
Authorities said Sunday they are seeking additional people who fired weapons during the shooting. Lt. James Lamb, commander of the Chesterfield County Police Department's Major Crimes Unit, said investigators are trying to determine what led to the shooting and whether the others who fired did so in self-defense or were among the aggressors. He did not say how many others fired.
Police have not released a possible motive.
Police said the victims ranged in age from 17 to 23, and only one of them — a 20-year-old man — was enrolled at VSU. All were hospitalized; one was treated and released, according to the New York Post.
Timeline
Camron Harris, 19, of Henrico, Va., was found hiding in a closet inside the Seward Hall dormitory around 4 p.m. Saturday and arrested by Chesterfield County police, according to the New York Post, citing Fox59 News. That was more than 14 hours after the shooting, and several hours after university officials had already lifted the campus lockdown, saying law enforcement did not believe there was an immediate threat, the Associated Press reported.
What happened Saturday
The shooting was reported at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday near the university's Quad Annexes, where campus police and Chesterfield County officers found five people with gunshot wounds outside campus dormitories. The gunfire triggered a campus lockdown as students were getting ready for the new school year.
Reactions
"We don't have specific locations that we are looking (at) yet as we are working on identifying them," Lamb said in an email to the AP.
What's Next
Classes start Monday
Many students had just completed the university's "New Trojans Experience" for incoming students when the shooting happened, the AP reported. Classes resume Monday. The AP said it left email and telephone messages with Virginia State University administrators.
