WHO Warns Congo Ebola Could Be Deadliest Ever
The News
The World Health Organization warned Wednesday that Congo's Ebola outbreak is spreading faster than any before it and is on track to become the deadliest on record.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the outbreak in eastern Congo has already killed more than 2,000 people out of more than 4,300 reported cases.
The strain driving it — the rare Bundibugyo virus — has no approved vaccine or treatment.

The Bundibugyo strain has no proven vaccine or treatment, a key difference from recent outbreaks that were halted with existing tools.
More than two-thirds of deaths are occurring in communities rather than treatment centers, WHO said.
Conflict, poor infrastructure, and community distrust are blocking contact tracing and care.
One analytics firm estimates true infections are four to five times higher than reported, and puts the odds at 90% that this becomes the largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded.
Timeline
The first 1,000 deaths took nine weeks to accumulate. The second 1,000 took just three weeks.
The UN humanitarian chief said the outbreak is now doubling in size roughly every 20 days.
Last month, clinical trials for two vaccines and two treatments began in Ituri province.
Reactions
Left-leaning outlets have tied the struggling response to cuts in international aid, including the dismantling of USAID.
Right-leaning coverage has focused instead on logistical, security, and infrastructure barriers, without citing aid cuts.
What's Next
WHO expects the outbreak to peak within six months under a moderate scenario, and to last nine to twelve months in a worst case.
It is unclear whether the virus will spread across borders into Uganda, South Sudan, or Rwanda.
Health workers say available data is unreliable, and whether the experimental vaccines and treatments will work in time remains unresolved.
